Why Kererū Ridge?

The Kererū, our last native bird capable of digesting the seeds from our largest native trees, plays a vital role in our forest ecosystems. They carry and spread the seeds of many native tree species, contributing to the health of the precious ecosystem of Te Papakura o Taranaki National Park. Honouring their significance, we have decided to bestow the name Kererū Ridge Lifestyle on our estate, recognising these gentle and magnificent feathered kaitiaki (guardians) of Taranaki Mounga.

The Kererū requires significant energy for even short flights. To support their movements between forests, it is crucial that we preserve smaller pockets of native bush scattered throughout the countryside. These remnants serve as resting and refuelling stops for the Kererū.

However, many of these remnants are under threat due to under-grazing by farm livestock. This can lead to the encroachment of weeds and shrubs, making the areas unsuitable for Kererū. To preserve these remnants as future Kererū habitats and vital biodiverse ecosystems, we can take several actions:

  • Fencing: Install fencing around remnants to protect them from livestock grazing.

  • Pest Management: Implement pest management programs to control invasive species that may harm the Kererū or its habitat.

  • Parameter Planting: Plant native trees and shrubs around the perimeters of remnants to provide additional food and shelter for the Kererū.

By taking these steps, we can help ensure that the Kererū has access to the resources it needs to survive and thrive.

A Vision for Ecological Enhancement

Kererū Ridge Lifestyle is a transformative project located in an area of significance adjacent to Te Papakura o Taranaki National Park. Once a working dairy farm, Kererū Ridge has been envisioned as Taranaki's first ecological enhancement family lifestyle parkland.

The project aims to restore the land to its natural state, transforming a herd home into a native tree nursery, reclaiming swampy farmland as natural wetlands, and extending and joining narrow riparian strips to create new stream-based ecosystems.

Kererū Ridge Lifestyle invites families to join in this journey of transformation. Together, we can create a vibrant and sustainable community that values and protects our environment.

  • Our vision

Living an ecological enhancement lifestyle.

We know it works, because we live it.

The co-owners of Kererū Ridge Lifestyle have spent the last 30 years committed to the ecological enhancement of the regions that their business have been active in. Their previous business and its community partners lead the national One Billion Trees Planting Program leader board for 3 years, having collectively planted over 9 million native trees under that initiative. With their various initiatives over many years, they have seen first hand the sustainable ecological benefits of working with like minded people and communities to reestablish vital ecosystems by planting significant areas of native forest and wetlands.

In previous ecological enhancement projects they have been involved in over the last 25 years, they have protected over 200 hectares of native forest that, due to extensive under-grazing by farm livestock, were virtually small dying forests and ecosystems. In the early 2000’s they were involved in the establishment of several native bush & bird haven islands throughout the Waikato to support the Regional Councils Bird Island Initiative.

Our latest ecological lifestyle development on Barclay Road near Stratford in Taranaki, started life as two dairy farms next to Taranaki Mounga. The initial ecological enhancement planting phase includes 3ha of wetlands and shared parkland.

A snapshot of 20 years progress

People living and working to enhance the nature that surrounds them.

2003

In 2003 this previous project undertaken by the co-owners of Kererū Ridge Lifestyle, was a working milking goat farm near Mangatautari Mountain in the Waikato. A large feature on the property was a 20ha block of completely under grazed native bush that had no regenerative tree growth, so was essentially a dying forest.

2023

20 years on, the now protected forest, is a thriving standalone ecosystem. The families living next to it have enhanced it by a further 40% through planting and establishment by extending the natural environment throughout their own and their wider communities ecological enhancement lifestyle projects.
